This was my senior project dedicated to the Liberal Arts Engineering Studies department of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. I took on this project because I found that the basketball community in San Luis Obispo was growing but most basketball players only knew about the basketball courts on campus. I wanted to help this community locate and review basketball courts outside of campus to help expand the basketball community across San Luis Obispo by designing a mobile app that would do just that. In the end, I was able to design a fully-tested, final prototype that would be passed on to the university in which future students can further develop to better the experience of the basketball community in San Luis Obispo.
72.7% of participants valued convenience when looking for a basketball court to play on.
Many of the participants mentioned they wanted to be able to know how crowded a court was before making the trip.
When asked what step of the basketball court finding process was the hardest to accomplish, Noah mentioned: “finding a basketball court that is open because I wanted to play a game but they were all full in ever court.”
“Waiting for a game is the most annoying thing to accomplish when all the courts are full.”
Main competitors: Fullcourt, Ballnow, XvsX Sports, Check-Up
Opportunities: Provide users with the ability to find nearby courts and review them.
Devonte Williams is a first-year college student who loves to play basketball. He has been playing basketball competitively since the age of 10 and wants to find a good basketball court to shoot some basketballs. He also wants to find a group of basketball players where he can shoot around with and play pick up games easily. He is looking for a an easy way to find basketball courts.
Our Hoop Central app will let users be able to find and review basketball courts around them. We will measure effectiveness by conducting usability tests in which users will find a basketball court using the app.
I sketched 5 potential wireframes for each screen, chose the best features from each sketch to combine them to a final one where I then digitalized each one.
I performed a quick usability study where I recruited 5 potential users, asked them to perform certain key tasks, and used certain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success rate. I then, analyzed the results in an affinity diagram and developed the following insights:
I applied insights from the previous usability study and implemented color, typography, and other visual design elements to create the final mockup and hi-fi prototype! Feel free to interact with my product through the link below.
I would first like to thank my mentor Fiona Robinson as she helped me a lot during the research and usability testing phases. Being the first personal project and app design I have ever done, I am pretty proud of myself! I learned a lot about the actual implementation of design rules and gained a lot of experience in prototyping on figma. If I were to redo this project, I would probably implement one more round of usability testing after the hi-fi prototyping as I added a lot of visual designs during that phase. I know there is a lot to improve on for my next project but I am happy I was able to use my love for basketball to help impact the basketball community in San Luis Obispo.
I am looking for full time/contract/internship opportunities in Product Design! I am also actively looking to collaborate with driven entrepreneurs to build a product that can help improve people's lifestyles!
